The trailer for The Descendants has debuted online. It is the first film in seven years from Oscar-winning writer/director Alexander Payne (unless you count his work as co-writer of I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which we don’t) and stars George Clooney as a man who must re-evaluate his life after his wife suffers a traumatic accident.
Payne is responsible for some modern classics (Election, About Schmidt, Sideways) so any project with his name attached has us intrigued. Although he’s famous for his tragicomic stylings, The Descendants – an adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings book of the same name – looks particularly sombre. With what looks like a thoughtful performance from Clooney – playing old for once – this could be another Academy Award contender.

The Descendants arrives in U.S. cinemas December 16, 2011, with an Australian release to follow.
