Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star as the villain in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming spaghetti western Django Unchained, according to a tweet from esteemed Q&A podcast host Jeff Goldsmith.
Although Twitter chatter is often far from reliable, Goldsmith knows what he’s talking about and certainly has connections in the industry. Here’s what he had to say:
“Casting Rumor: Leonardo DiCaprio WILL play villian Calvin Candie in Tarantino’s Django Unchained! QT wanted him for I.B. & now has him!”
It is true that Tarantino originally wanted DiCaprio to play Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds; a role that eventually went to Christoph Waltz (who already has a plum role in Django Unchained).
Hopefully we’ll get confirmation on DiCaprio’s involvement as an evil plantation owner in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, The Wire alum Idris Elba tweeted the following over the weekend:
“Having one of the biggest meetings of my professional life today…meeting a very controversial director for a very controversial part. :-/”
Some assumed he was referring to meeting Tarantino over Django, perhaps to play the title role (originally rumoured to belong to Will Smith).
Maybe we’re just getting ahead of ourselves. More news as it develops!
