Will Martin Scorsese join the Liz Taylor / Richard Burton love fest?

The passing of Elizabeth Taylor earlier in the year reignited Hollywood’s interest in the screen icon’s storied life. Paramount Pictures has optioned the rights to the book Furious Love – which tells of Taylor’s infamous love affair with Richard Burton – with Martin Scorsese in line to direct.

According to Deadline, the rights for Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger’s 2010 book were heavily sought after by Natalie Portman (likely as an acting vehicle for herself) and The King’s Speech screenwriter David Seidler, before ultimately going to Paramount. As Deadline points out: “this for a book that got 100 passes when initially shopped for a movie deal by the author’s reps”.

For those unaware of the Taylor/Burton romance, the duo fell in love on the set of Cleopatra. Although both were married at the time, they struck up an affair. The two of them wed in 1964, divorced in 1974, remarried in 1975, and then divorced again in 1976.

Scorsese seems like the right fit for this kind of story, but will his busy schedule allow it? More news as it develops.

Discuss: Who can you see playing Burton and Taylor? Don’t say Brangelina.
