Hugh Jackman, Paul Bettany wanted for Les Misérables

Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men? Les Misérables is heading back to the big screen and according to Deadline, Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) and Universal studios have their sights set on Hugh Jackman to play Jean Valjean.

Based on the classic story by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables hasn’t appeared on our cinema screens since 1998, when Liam Neeson played Valjean, Geoffrey Rush was Javert and Claire Danes took on Cosette. Set in early nineteenth century France amidst revolution, the story follows several characters searching for redemption.

We know Jackman is an all singing, all dancing superstar but who is being touted to play his rival Javert? Deadline reports Paul Bettany has read (and sung) for the role, an onscreen pairing, which in our opinion, looks to be spot on.

The film will be produced by Cameron Mackintosh, who produced the award winning stage show, with a screenplay by Bill Nicholson. Production is said to begin later this year in Europe.

Discuss: Would you like to see Jackman return to the world of the musical?
