Cumberbatch, Humphries and Lilly join The Hobbit

Peter Jackson has revealed the final round of major casting for The Hobbit via his official Facebook page, announcing Barry Humphries as the Goblin King , Evangeline Lilly as Woodland Elf Tauriel and Benedict Cumberbatch as the dragon Smaug.

Much loved Sherlock Holmes actor Cumberbatch was already voicing the Necromancer – ruler of the stronghold of Dol Gulder – in the film when his Sherlock and Hobbit co-star Martin Freeman leaked news of his additional role last month. Jackson officially confirmed Cumberbatch will voice Smaug while announcing the latest casting.

Australian acting royalty Humphries will play the Goblin King, with Jackson weighing in that he will create the King “in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum [in The Lord of The Rings]”.

Fans of the television series Lost will recognise Lilly, who will play a character specifically created for this adaptation, someone who Jackson says will not be hooking up with fellow elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom).

The Hobbit will be split into two films with the first, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey due for release in December 2012.

Discuss: Glad to see Sherlock, Dame Edna and Freckles join The Hobbit?
