The trailer for Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing has debuted online, proving once and for all that this long-delayed feature is actually coming to cinemas.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as a paleontologist who travels to the Antarctic to join a Norwegian scientific team, led by Carter (Joel Edgerton), that has discovered an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice. Little do they know that some … thing … has escaped from the ship, and can kill and take the form of the unwitting scientists.
The events that take place in this film immediately precede those in Carpenter’s 1982 flick, which was itself a remake of Howard Hawks‘ 1951 feature The Thing From Another World.

Although the trailer gives away a few too many kills and body-transformations, I have to admit it has me excited.
The Thing arrives in Australian cinemas October 13, 2011.
Discuss: Does the film even have a chance up against Carpenter’s classic?
According to this trailer, Joel Edgerton is a mute.
It starts on my birthday. Gotta be happy with that:)
Nice to hear elements of the original score in the trailer. I don’t expect it to be better than Carpenter’s film, but as long as I get to stare at Mary Elizabeth Winstead for 90mins or so, I’m happy!
