Harry Potter enjoys epic opening weekend gross

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two has broken a bunch of box office records in its opening weekend, heading to the top of so many classes to make Hermione positively envious.

The final instalment of the series now holds the record for the biggest ever opening weekend, claiming $475.6 million worldwide and smashing the previous record held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which grossed a mere $394 million. It also enjoyed the biggest opening weekend in U.S. history with $168.5 million, trumping The Dark Knight’s $158.4 million tally. It should be noted that neither Half-Blood Prince nor The Dark Knight had the luxury of inflated 3D prices as Deathly Hallows Part Two.

The film also enjoyed the biggest ever opening day/single day gross, earning $92 million, a full $20 million more than former number one, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Here in Australia, the flick similarly broke the record for the biggest opening day of all time, collecting more than $7 million at the local box office.

Discuss: Can Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two break the magic billion-dollar mark?
