Captain Planet heading to the big screen

Transformers producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford are planning on bringing another beloved cartoon series to the big screen: Captain Planet.

According to The L.A. Times, Murphy and Montford will adapt the Cartoon Network show from the early 1990s into a live-action blockbuster.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers featured five teenagers who were charged by Gaia, spirit of the Earth, to save the world from environmental disaster. Given superpowers, the kids could summon magical entity Captain Planet to help them in their quest.

The show was based on an idea by Ted Turner, and its reputation today is as a nostalgic oddity. Still, its “green” themes were certainly ahead of the curve. The question is, “Will audiences embrace a preachy¬†action film?”

Discuss: Well, will they?

  1. I, for one, will pay to watch it. Probably.

  2. Oh no way. There’s already enough preachy kids movies (Pixar, anyone?).
