Robert Rodriguez confirms Machete sequels; Sin City 2 could happen “this year”

Robert Rodriguez has a penchant for announcing numerous projects that never come to fruition. However, the whip-fast filmmaker can churn out films so quickly, there’s always a chance that his crazy proposals will eventually become motion pictures.

On a panel at this year’s Comic Con, Rodriguez announced that he will be working on two sequels to his mexploitation flick Machete.

According to IndieWire, Rodriguez claimed both flicks have been given the green light (although it is unknown if Fox, or his own studio Troublemaker, gave the go ahead). The first sequel, Machete Kills, will begin production immediately. He described its follow up, Machete Kills Again, as a “space opera, a machete-shaped lightsaber. Machete kills in space.”

Rodriguez also elaborated on the long-gestating Sin City 2, announcing ““if [it] happens, it’ll happen this year.” The writer/director has already finished the screenplay, which will include a new story from comic writer Frank Miller. He also revealed his interest in making the film in 3-D.

Discuss: Which would you rather see first – Machete Kills or Sin City 2?
