Trailer Debut: The Rum Diary

The trailer for Bruce Robinson‘s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel The Rum Diary has arrived online, meaning the long-delayed film is nearing release.

Johnny Depp stars as journalist Paul Kemp (but really, Hunter S. Thompson), who moves from New York to Puerto Rico and becomes embroiled in a complicated affair with a woman named Chenault (Amber Heard). As you would assume, much rum is imbibed throughout the tale.

Thompson wrote the novel in the 1960s, when he was only in his twenties. It did not see release until 1998. In honour of its delayed release, the film version has had a similarly tumultuous production history. After a decade in development hell, shooting began in March of 2009. The Rum Diary¬†marks director Bruce Robinson’s first film in almost twenty years.

Check out the trailer and share your thoughts below.

The Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas comparisons will no doubt be inevitable (Depp’s recurring Thompson imitation alone will invite that). Still, based on the trailer, Robinson’s take seems to be less loopy and dark than Terry Gilliam‘s cult classic.

The Rum Diaries also stars Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins. It opens in the U.S. October 28, 2011, with an Australian release to follow.

Discuss: Any fans of Thompson’s novel out there? Care to comment on the tone of this trailer?

  1. Love the book, the trailer suggests that the film adaptation has more of a slapstick type feel to it…to me this is not keeping in spirit with the book at all. It has elements of humour but is definitely not a comedy
