Eddie Murphy will host the 84th Academy Awards

From your lips to God’s ears. Yesterday we discussed the possibility of Eddie Murphy hosting the 84th Academy Awards ceremony after he’d engaged in preliminary talks with producer Brett Ratner. The Academy has today announced that Murphy is indeed locked into the gig.

In the official press release – printed in full by Deadline here – Ratner elaborates on his reasons for wanting Murphy to take the stage:

“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever, … With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances – especially on stage – I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show [fellow producer] Don [Mischer] and I want to produce in February.”

As we mentioned previously, there were plenty of reasons for Murphy to take the gig. Not only does he have two films awaiting release that could use the publicity (the Ratner-directed Tower Heist and family flick A Thousand Words), but his waning star could use the lift.

The 84th Academy Awards will take place on February 26, 2012.

Discuss: Is Murphy a good fit for the Oscars?

  1. I hope he pushes the envelope like Gervais did. Hehehe.

  2. Yeah, I reckon Eddie’s great! I always watch his movies ’cause he always gives me a good laugh. He is unique … there is only one Eddie Murphy. I’ll even watch the Awards this time if Eddie’s doing the gig. “YOU DA MAN EDDIE!
