Russell Crowe joins Hugh Jackman in Les Misérables

Russell Crowe has been added to the cast of Tom Hooper’s upcoming take on Les Misérables, joining the previously rumoured lead Hugh Jackman.

Deadline confirms Jackman and Crowe’s casting as protagonists Jean Valjean and Javert respectively. A release date has been set for December 7, 2012.

Based on the classic story by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables was last seen on cinema screens in 1998, with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush in the lead roles.

Although Jackman’s involvement hadn’t been officially confirmed prior, it was assumed as much when it was revealed production on The Wolverine would be delayed.

Les Misérables will be Hooper’s first film since picking up his Best Director Oscar for The King’s Speech.

Discuss: How do you feel about the all singing, all dancing duo of Jackman and Crowe?

  1. Oh. I was excited until I read “singing”. 30-odd foot of grunt (or whatever Russ’s band’s name was)…anyone? I’d rather watch Craig McLachlan singing “Mona”.
