The Inbetweeners Movie outgrosses Pirates 4 and The Hangover 2 in UK

The Inbetweeners Movie has become a surprise smash hit in the United Kingdom, earning more than $56 million in three weeks and becoming the third highest grossing film of the year.

According to THR, the film adaptation of the acclaimed E4 television series recently overtook The Hangover Part II and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in the 2011 moneymaking stakes, and now sits behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II and The King’s Speech at the UK box office. It also broke the record for the all-time greatest opening week for a live-action comedy.

With such spectacular momentum behind the film, producers have taken the pic to the Toronto International Film Festival to sell distribution rights to foreign buyers.

The film and series stars Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison as high schoolers with a profound lack of social skills. The Inbetweeners Movie sees the boys graduate, and head to Greece for a holiday. Directed by Ben Palmer, its Australian release date is October 20, 2011.

Discuss: Can The Inbetweeners Movie replicate its UK success abroad?
