Book of Mormon movie on the way

From your lips to God’s ears! Trey Parker and Matt Stone have confirmed they intend to adapt their Tony winning Broadway hit The Book of Mormon into a movie musical.

Parker spoke to Entertainment Weekly about their plans: “Hopefully it will have a big run and a big tour and then we can do the movie in several years”.

The boys behind South Park teamed up with Avenue Q co-writer Robert Lopez and producer Scott Rudin (South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut, Team America: World Police, No Country for Old Men) for their darkly comic tale of idealistic Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda.

The show garnered Tonys for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Nikki M. James) earlier this year. Its original Broadway cast recording (featuring stars Andrew Rannells, Josh Gad and James) became the highest charting Broadway album in four decades. Here’s one of our favourite cuts, taken from the 2011 Tony Awards:

Considering Parker and Stone already have Tonys and Emmys to their name (with a Grammy surely on the way for the show’s official album), the duo are dangerously close to scoring an EGOT. The ‘O’ stands for Oscar … and they’ve already been nominated for one previously!

Discuss: Any fans of the musical out there? Will it suit the big screen?
