J.J. Abrams officially signs on for Star Trek 2

In news that will surprise absolutely no one, J.J. Abrams has officially signed on to direct a sequel to his hit 2009 flick Star Trek.

Although it was assumed Abrams would return to the captain’s chair for the follow-up to his wildly successful franchise reboot, the director was a little cagey about committing to a release date. Instead, he focused his energy on Super 8, while Trek writer Alex Kurtzman worked on his own directorial debut Welcome to People.

Insiders “familiar with the director’s plans” have assured Vulture that a script is nearing completion and Abrams will start shooting the film at the end of 2011.

Star Trek 2 was originally given a release date of June 2012 by Paramount Pictures, but the slot was given to G.I. Joe 2 when it became apparent Abrams wouldn’t make the deadline.

Discuss: Glad to see this sequel finally moving ahead?
