Rooney Mara wanted for Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake

After years in development hell, that English-language remake of the South Korean revenge thriller Oldboy is picking up some steam. Last month it was confirmed Josh Brolin would star and Spike Lee would direct, while Christian Bale is still rumoured to appear as the villain.

Twitch now reports The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘s Rooney Mara is being targeted to play the female lead.

Brolin will star in the role originally played by Choi Min-sik in Park Chan-wook‘s 2003 original. He plays a man kidnapped and imprisoned without explanation, and released 15 years later (also without explanation). Framed for the murder of his wife, our hero goes on a violent rampage and hunts down his mysterious captors.

Mara would potentially play a young woman who joins Brolin’s character in his hunt.

Discuss: This cast is actually really impressive. Does this remake have some potential after all?

  1. I think your post has potential for spoilers!

  2. If anyone could remake this movie, Spike Lee could. I wonder what your spoiler was? Surely not the main twist of the entire movie (which I was actually wondering if you would mention it considering who this girl would be playing..)?

    • I would NEVER reveal that twist (although the Twitch article does, unfortunately). All I deleted was a plot point from the middle of the film (but still, it should have been left out to begin with).
