Michael Winterbottom, Liam Gallagher making Beatles break-up flick

Director Michael Winterbottom looks set to direct The Longest Cocktail Party, an adaptation of the Richard DiLello book about the recording of The Beatles’ final album, Let It Be.

The Playlist reports Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop, Four Lions) will write the screenplay, while Liam Gallagher of Oasis fame will produce. Gallagher, who holds the rights to the novel, will share the producing title with Winterbottom and Andrew Eaton.

In addition to covering the last Beatles album, the film will tell of the founding of the band’s record company, Apple Records. While Gallagher is keen to dive in, Winterbottom’s exhaustive schedule means the film will have a long production timeline.

Gallagher has stated he wants Johnny Depp for one of the lead roles, though this is unlikely due to Depp’s age. Another hurdle the film faces is clearing the rights to Beatles songs, which is proving harder than expected.

Discuss: Do you think we’ll ever see this come to fruition?
