Muppet backlash; Frank Oz and ‘old guard’ upset with new movie

It seems Statler and Waldorf are not the only ones unimpressed with the new Muppet movie.

Famed puppeteer Frank Oz and as a group of writers and performers who helped develop the franchise alongside Jim Henson have expressed their concern over the direction screenwriter Jason Segel and Disney are taking their characters.

Frank Oz told Metro he “wasn’t happy with the script”.

“I don’t think they respected the characters. But I don’t want to go on about it like a sourpuss and hurt the movie.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The ‘old Muppets guard’ claim Segel and director James Bobin “didn’t have a complete understanding of the Muppets characters or were willing to sacrifice the characters’ integrity to land a joke”. A scene from the trailer in which Fozzie Bear wears ‘fart shoes’ is noted as an example.

The Muppets arrives in U.S. cinemas over the Thanksgiving weekend, but doesn’t hit Australian cinemas until January 5, 2012.

Discuss: We’ll know whether Segel and Bobin have pulled it off soon enough!
