The Dark Tower being rebuilt (with a smaller budget); TV show headed to HBO

UPDATE: This post from 25/10/11 has been updated with news of the TV show headed to HBO.

Earlier this year, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s ambitious vision for a film trilogy and two short-run TV series based on Stephen King’s epic Dark Tower books was nixed by Universal.

Speaking to The Playlist, Grazer believes the project is back on track now that they’ve shaved a decent hunk of cash from the budget.

“In the $140 million draft, the ending wasn’t quite as satisfying. Now, we’ve got $45 million, $50 million out of the way and a really satisfying ending. It’s gonna get made.”

It is believed this is only in reference to the first Dark Tower film, and not the trilogy of pictures as a whole.

Grazer also informed MTV that the TV show will air on HBO.

“We’ll do the TV with HBO, and we’ll do the movie with… to be determined. We’ll do it right.”

The script for the first flick has been written by frequent Howard collaborator Akiva Goldsman, who will also produce alongside Grazer and King.

Javier Bardem is still attached as gungslinging protagonist Roland Deschain in the fantasy-western.

Now, they just need a studio to bite.

Discuss: Would you still like to see The Dark Tower brought to the big screen?
