Sony set to Smurf-up Popeye

Following the surprise success of The Smurfs, Sony Pictures Animation are set to bring another beloved retro cartoon character to the big screen.

Deadline reports Smurfs scribes Jay Scherick and David Ronn have been recruited to pen Popeye and introduce a new generation to the spinach-eating sailorman.

Popeye will, of course, be in 3D.

Discuss: Looking forward to sharing Popeye with your kids, or is this harvesting of old characters getting ridiculous?

  1. and somehow I don’t think there will be a Robin Williams cameo in this film.

  2. Because the last popeye movie worked so well

  3. What the heck? This is such a bad idea. Today’s kids are far more sophisticated and have higher expectations than being interested in seeing a weird man eating spinach.
