Robert De Niro looks set to play a character more villainous and depraved than Max Cady and Travis Bickle combined: Bernie Madoff.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO have optioned Laurie Sandell’s book Truth and Consequences: Life Inside the Madoff Family with the intention of bringing it to the small screen.
De Niro’s Tribeca Productions is producing, and the two-time Oscar winner is expected to star as the notorious financier.
Madoff operated the largest Ponzi scheme in history, swindling investors of approximately $18 billion. He was sentenced to 150 years in prison. Last year, Madoff’s son Mark was found dead in his apartment, having killed himself out of shame.
A film based on Madoff’s life, based on Diane Henriques’ book The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust, is also in the works.
