Director George Miller has revealed he is considering a brand new trilogy of Mad Max films, kicking off with the long-gestating Fury Road.
Speaking with The Financial Times, Miller said Max’s story expanded as he began working on the script for Fury Road.
“We started with [Fury Road], but we then started to do a second story and a third. We’ve written the script for the second and almost finished the third. We never intended to, they were part of the exploration of the characters.”
Miller would neither “deny or confirm” the rumour that the film is budgeted at $200 million (despite he being the one to mention the figure in the first place).
It is unknown, however, if he’ll be trusted with that much money following the flop of his Happy Feet 2, which led to the firing of over 600 employees from his Dr. D studio.
The plagued production of Fury Road has been delayed for a number of years due to scheduling issues and disastrous weather at the original shooting location of Broken Hill.
Tom Hardy is locked in to star as Max, and Charlize Theron also reportedly has a role in the feature. Shooting begins – fingers crossed – early 2012.
Discuss: Would you like to see a brand new trilogy of Mad Max films?
Only if they’re done very very well and with the right cast. Mad Max has a huge legacy…we don’t want another Phantom Menace on our hands.
I hope they retain the Xb Interceptor!
