In reply to the question, ‘Just how many celebrities can we fit into one movie?’, the trailer for the Kirk Jones directed What to Expect When You’re Expecting answers, ‘As many as your flimsy plot wants’.
On the heels of Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve celebrity-ganza, WTEWYE is an adaptation of the bestselling pregnancy book by Heidi Murkoff. Written for the screen by Shauna Cross (Whip It) and Heather Hach (Freaky Friday), the film stars Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Chace Crawford, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock and Matthew Morrison, amongst others.
With the not so clever tagline ‘Expect The Unexpected’, the film follows a swarm of characters each experiencing the miracle of birth in various ways. From the dishevelled Banks telling a room full of women that “pregnancy sucks”, to the father’s group where each man admits his shortcomings as a dad, this plot looks to be thin and full of stale jokes (but we could be wrong).
