R.I.P. Whitney Houston

Singing sensation and star of The Bodyguard, Whitney Houston, was found dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel over the weekend. She was 48 years old.

Though the cause of death has not yet been disclosed, it is understood the pop legend was discovered in the bathtub by her bodyguard.

The troubled singer had been battling addiction for much of the past two decades.

Best known for her powerful voice and nearly-unparalleled success in the music industry – she is the only artist to have seven consecutive Number One Billboard Hot 100 hits in the United States – Huston was briefly one of the biggest stars on the silver screen too.

She starred alongside Kevin Costner in the 1992 blockbuster The Bodyguard, which grossed more than $400 million at the worldwide box office. The picture’s soundtrack featured her cover of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You, and became the fourth best-selling album of all time. Houston later appeared in the modest hits Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher’s Wife.

Her drug dependencies, as well as her tumultuous relationship with ex-husband Bobby Brown, stifled her numerous attempts at a comeback in the 2000s.

After a 15-year absence from film, Houston starred in the Motown-set Sparkle, alongside singers Jordin Sparks and Cee Lo Green. It will be released posthumously in 2012.

Houston is survived by her 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina.
