In news that should surprise absolutely no one, Oscar favourite The Artist collected a number of major prizes at the 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards.
The silent black-and-white pic nabbed Best Film, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Original Screenplay (Hazanavicius), Best Leading Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Original Music (Ludovic Bource), Best Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman) and Best Costume Design (Mark Bridges).
The very British Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy fared well despite The Artist’s sweep; Tomas Alfredson‘s adaptation of John Le Carre’s spy novel was named Outstanding British Film, and took home Best Adapted Screenplay (Bridget O’Connor, Peter Straughan).
Meryl Streep‘s turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady earned her the Best Actress prize, while Academy Award shoo-ins Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer won Best Supporting Actor and Actress for their work in Beginners and The Help respectively.
Asif Kapadia‘s Senna – snubbed by the Academy – won Best Documentary and Best Editing; Paddy Considine‘s Tyrannosaur was named the most Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer; and Rango picked up its umpteenth Best Animated Film accolade.
