Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska to make directorial debut

Aussie starlets Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska are set to direct segments of a new omnibus film produced by Robert Connolly.

According to The Australian, they will be among a number of filmmakers bringing Tim Winton’s short-story collection The Turning to the big screen.

Also joining them: AACTA winning helmer of SnowtownJustin Kurzel, David Wenham, Jonathan auf der Heide, Claire McCarthy, Tony Ayres Ian Meadows, Shaun Gladwell, Stephen Page, Ashlee Page, Benedict Andrews, Rhys Raham, and Connolly.

Screen Australia previously announced their funding of the project back in 2011, but it seems to finally be moving forward.

Here’s their description of the project:

“Seventeen extraordinary Australian directors respond to the hauntingly beautiful collection of short stories by Tim Winton. Spanning 30 years, The Turning’s overlapping stories of second thoughts and mid-life regret are set in the brooding small-town world of coastal Western Australia.”

Discuss: Intrigued?

  1. Cate Blanchett a starlet? My heavens Simon what does Cate have to do to achieve Star status?

    • Haha, fair enough. Was just being complimentary, and forgot that starlet is “lesser” than star. You know what I mean…
