The Avengers breaks opening weekend record at Australian box office

It’s not all bad news for Joss Whedon. His Marvel team-up flick The Avengers claimed the biggest opening weekend in Australian box office history.

According to Mumbrella, the film grossed $19.7 million on 621 screens, beating the $18.4 million record (briefly) held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

It’s worth noting, however, that The Avengers opened on a Wednesday, allowing for a cheeky five-day weekend to make bank.

Though the movie is yet to open in the States, it has already amassed $178.4 million worldwide.
