Following on from its record-breaking run in Australian cinemas, Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers has claimed the title of biggest opening weekend in America.
The Marvel team-up flick grossed $200.3 million, obliterating the record set last year by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2‘s now-minuscule seeming $169.2 million tally.
According to Box Office Mojo, it is now the fastest movie to reach $100 million, $150 million, and $200 million at the box office, and enjoyed the all-time biggest Saturday and Sunday.
After just two weeks of international release, The Avengers has collected $641 million. We’ll keep you updated as to whether it can claim Avatar‘s crown for highest grossing movie. That James Cameron epic earned $2.78 billion.
