Kurt Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen pull out of Django Unchained

Production has already begun on Quentin Tarantino‘s spaghetti western Django Unchainedbut two notable actors have pulled out of key roles.

According to Variety’s Jeff Snider, Kurt Russell has abandoned the part of slave trainer Ace Woody. He follows in the footsteps of Kevin Costner, who first turned down the role. The reasons for his exit have not been specified.

Meanwhile, Sacha Baron Cohen told Howard Stern in a rare interview as himself that he couldn’t appear in the film on account of his publicity commitments for The Dictator.

He was to play a gambler who purchases the wife of freed slave Django (Jamie Foxx). Jonah Hill was originally tapped for the character.

The film does still star Foxx, Christoph Waltz as his bounty hunter buddy, and Leonardo DiCaprio as the villainous plantation owner who captures Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington).

Django Unchained arrives in Australian cinemas January 24, 2013.
