Some high profile teasers have landed over the past few days, but perhaps none as exciting as this one for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s controversial new flick The Master.
As with most PTA films, it has been shrouded in mystery for some time. Originally it was set to be a scathing examination of Scientology and its founder L. Ron Hubbard, although neither was mentioned explicitly in the script.
The studios balked at the ambitiously budgeted feature – and no doubt its subject matter – so Anderson made the parallels less explicit, and secured funding from billionairess Megan Ellison.
Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as the titular Master, a man who sees his newly founded religion rise in post-war USA. Joaquin Phoenix – returning from his self imposed (fake) exile – plays Hoffman’s right hand man.
As you’ll see from this new teaser direct from Cannes, he has a very spotty past.
That score you fell in love with is from Anderson collaborator and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Hopefully he creates something as lasting here as he did with There Will Be Blood.
The Master also stars Amy Adams and Laura Dern. It arrives in American cinemas October 12, and hopefully in Australia soon after.
