Yesterday we saw the first bit of footage from Paul Thomas Anderson‘s not-so-secret Scientology parable The Master, which concerns the rise of a cult-like religion in post-war America.
According to The Wrap, Anderson showed the film to his Magnolia star – and famed Scientologist – Tom Cruise with the intention of preventing conflict with the controversial church.
Two sources close to the movie say Cruise “had issues” with elements of the film, though it was not severe enough to damage their longstanding friendship.
The Church of Scientology are yet to see the movie, but distributors The Weinstein Company plan on showing the flick to another of the religion’s outspoken members, John Travolta.
Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as the titular Master; based loosely on Scientology-founder L. Ron Hubbard. Joaquin Phoenix plays Hoffman’s right hand man.
The Master also stars Amy Adams and Laura Dern. It arrives in American cinemas October 12, and hopefully in Australia soon after.
Discuss: Does this make you more or less intrigued by the mystery of The Master?
