The trailer for Michael Haneke‘s Palme d’Or winner Amour debuts online and it’s as powerful and elegant as we expected.
After winning the Palme d’Or in 2009 with his previous film The White Ribbon, no one expected Michael Haneke to score another so quickly. But win another he did. Amour premiered at Cannes recently to glowing reviews; now we have the trailer, which suggests Haneke is in a classically devastating mode here. In just two minutes he manages to knot my stomach up. Add 120 minutes to that sensation and I think we have another Haneke masterpiece.
Amour tells the story of Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who lovingly takes care of his dementia ridden wife, Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), in their twilight years. Legendary French actor Trintignant was lured back to the screen to play Georges after retiring from cinema 16 years ago. Haneke regular Isabelle Huppert also appears as the couple’s daughter Eva.
Amour is set to have its Australian premiere at the Sydney Film Festival mid-June.
