Would you like to see a film about the life of Jesus from the director of Showgirls and the co-writer of Pulp Fiction? Deadline reports this controversial project from Paul Verhoeven may become a reality as funding was recently secured.
Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Basic Instinct, Total Recall) has been relatively quiet the last decade with only one movie, Black Book, to his name. Verhoeven did author a novel in 2007 about the life of Jesus which apparently was a realistic retelling of the gospels which omitted all the miracles and supernatural elements, portraying the prophet as a political activist who performed exorcisms and led a rebellion against the Romans.
Roger Avary (co-writer of Pulp Fiction) has been recruited to pen the screenplay for what will undoubtedly be the most controversial religious pic in years. Verhoeven is a brilliantly visceral filmmaker and it’s exciting to see him tackle such an explosive topic.
