Our first glimpse of Joe Wright’s adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic Anna Karenina has arrived with the film’s official trailer, and it screams Oscar.
Using his Atonement and Pride and Prejudice leading lady, Keira Knightley plays the titular Anna, an aristocrat whose voice over opens the trailer by saying “I was 18 when I got married, but it was not love.” Set in 19th Century Russian high society, the picture also stars Jude Law as Anna’s husband Alexei and Aaron Johnson as the man she has an affair with, Count Vronsky.
Wright has employed a single soundstage for the majority of the filming, and this return to basic theatre really shines in the trailer. Couple this with the lush costume design by Jacqueline Durran and you have a movie that is primed to compete against the likes of Les Miserables and The Great Gatsby in several Academy Award categories.
Anna Karenina does not yet have an Australian release date.
