Ben Lewin‘s The Sessions was one of the big hits out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, picking up the Audience Award and the Special Jury Prize for its acting ensemble.
It’s now headed to cinemas, before ultimately making a run for Oscar.
Formerly known as The Surrogate, it stars John Hawkes as a paraplegic man determined to lose his virginity. After consulting a priest (William H. Macy), he allows his therapist (Moon Bloodgood) to hire a sex worker (Helen Hunt) for the gig.
The trailer has a more comic tone than the premise might suggest, though we’re sure a heavy-hitter like Hawke will be able to deliver the gravitas when it matters most.
Here’s hoping the hard-working Hawkes can pick up another Academy Award nomination, following his break-out performance in Winter’s Bone (after decades in the industry).
The Sessions hits U.S theatres in October, with an Australian release to follow.
