MGM sue to shut down Raging Bull 2

According to Deadline, MGM has filed a lawsuit attempting to halt the production of Raging Bull 2, a sequel currently filming based on parts of Jake LaMotta’s memoir that were left out of Martin Scorsese‘s classic 1980 film.

MGM aren’t messing around with this legal action, not only wanting this sequel to never see the light of day but also pushing for significant compensatory amounts. Apparently, according to the original pre-Raging Bull contract from the late 1970s, MGM reserved the right to produce any original sequel material written by LaMotta and they were never offered or consulted when an independent company began production on Raging Bull 2.

The sequel currently shooting has a pretty decent cast attached (William Forsythe, Cloris Leachman, Penelope Ann Miller, Joe Montegna, Paul Sorvino and Natasha Henstridge); but I can’t get too sad about this potential David and Goliath battle, as we don’t need a sequel to one of the best films ever made.

Discuss: Do you want this Raging Bull sequel to see the light of day?
