As if the supporting cast of The Hunger Games wasn’t already filled with beloved, acclaimed actors (Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Toby Jones, Donald Sutherland), an Oscar winner has been thrown into the fray to further legitimise the YA property.
Lionsgate has announced the casting of Philip Seymour Hoffman in Francis Lawrence‘s sequel Catching Fire. Hoffman will play head gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee.
Deadline shared the studio’s press release, as well as the official plot synopsis:
“THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.”
Shooting starts late September, with Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth all reprising their roles from the original.
