Jeremy Renner in talks to play Julian Assange in WikiLeaks film

In some spot-on potential casting news, Jeremy Renner is eyeing the role of Julian Assange in the WikiLeaks film currently in development at DreamWorks.

Deadline confirms that the actor, next seen in the upcoming The Bourne Legacy, is at the top of the interest pile, and that director Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Part 2) is also in conversations with the studio.

The screenplay has been written by Josh Singer and based on the books WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy by David Leigh and Luke Harding, and Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange At The World’s Most Dangerous Website by Daniel Domscheit-Berg.

Renner’s stock is rising after two Oscar nominations (The Hurt Locker, The Town) and a turn in this year’s blockbuster The Avengers. While his physique is somewhat bulkier than Assange’s, there’s no denying a similarity between the two.

Discuss: Glad to see the rising action star potentially return to drama?
