Russell Crowe to direct Bill Hicks biopic

Russell Crowe is said to make his feature directorial debut with a biopic on the late comedian Bill Hicks, The Sydney Telegraph reports.

Many had thought the star would tackle the role himself but it seems Crowe will instead reside behind the camera for the first creative retelling of Hicks’ life. The documentary American: The Bill Hicks Story came out in 2009, further highlighting the public’s admiration of and interest in the comedian who died in 1994 of pancreatic cancer.

Mark Staufer, a friend of Crowe’s, wrote the screenplay which has already gone through several rewrites, and has confirmed to The Telegraph that the film will go into production in early 2013. On who would play the outspoken and controversial comic, Staufer said, “It is a huge role for someone, made all the more special, or downright scary, by the fact the director is an Oscar-winning actor like Russell.”

Discuss: Who would you like to see play Hicks?
