Trailer Debut: Hansel and Gretel – Witch Hunters

The first trailer for Hansel and Gretel – Witch Hunters has arrived, flaunting creepy witches and gun-toting siblings Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton fifteen years after they emerged victorious from the candy covered house.

It seems Hansel and Gretel have developed a taste for witch hunting – specifically killing – and now work as bounty hunters. Their weaponry is a mix of renaissance and modern technology, their outfits predominantly leather and buckles, their attitude decidedly kick arse.

While the overall feel of the trailer is hammy, there are some glimmers of hope – thanks to the splashes of humour included – that this film won’t fall into Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter territory. While Arterton has described the film as Tarantino-esque, one can’t help but recall the disaster that was Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood.

Directed by Norwegian Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow), the film, held back for a year by Paramount who feared overexposing Renner before the release of The Avengers and Bourne Legacy, will be released on January 17, 2013.
