Oldboy director Park Chan-wook makes his English-language debut with Stoker, a creepy tale of a demented family starring Aussies Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, and Jacki Weaver.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
“After India’s (Wasikowska’s) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.”
Park’s visual style is readily apparent here, even if his native Korean tongue isn’t. The trailer certainly seems to give a lot of the movie’s plot away – including a significant cast member being murdered, maybe – but if we’ve learnt anything from his earlier features, there are still plenty of surprises to come.
Stoker was written by former Prison Break star Wentworth Miller.
It hits cinemas early 2013.
