Anna Kendrick sings for The Last Five Years

Anna Kendrick has signed up to star in a film adapted from the modern-day off-Broadway musical The Last Five Years, Deadline reports.

The movie will follow the rise and fall of a relationship over five years.

The audacious conceit of the stage version was the way narrative told one member of the couple’s story chronologically while the other story was told in reverse, with the musical culminating in a song where they simultaneously break up and get together.

The Last Five Years is set to be adapted and directed by veteran filmmaker Richard LaGravenese, best known for penning The Fisher King and more recently Water For Elephants. As director he is more of an unknown quantity, with his most recent effort, P.S., I Love You, not especially impressing.

The Last Five Years is a pretty fascinating project for all involved and even if it turns out to be a failure I am betting it will be a glorious one. There certainly aren’t many modern musicals like this being made so count me interested.

There is no release date at this time.
