Trailer Debut: The Heat

Did someone say ‘female buddy-cop movie’? Check out Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in the trailer for The Heat, a worryingly conventional-looking film that has one original thing going for it – the two cops are women.

Taking a script from Parks and Recreation writer Kate Dippold, The Heat brings together Sandra Bullock’s “uptight and straight-laced” FBI agent with Melissa McCarthy’s “foul-mouthed” detective  to bring down a “ruthless drug lord”. Directed by Paul Feig, of Bridesmaids fame, this trailer seems full of moments that are recycled from better buddy-cop films. The final joke, for example, is straight out of Lethal Weapon 3 (“It’s a man’s girdle!”).

On the bright side, Melissa McCarthy is always fun (2013 is set to be a big year for her with three major titles hitting our screens, including Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up sequel, This Is 40) and Sandra Bullock looks like she plays the straight ‘Danny Glover’ role well. I just really hope that this film doesn’t coast on its formula too much, as everything about this initial trailer seems unfunny, generic, and quite bland.

The Heat hits cinemas in 2013.
