Ronan, Vikander, and Wilde vie for Cinderella

Saoirse Ronan, Alicia Vikander, and Gabriella Wilde will face off for the titular role in Mark Romanek’s live action Cinderella, according to Variety’s Jeff Sneider.

Ronan, star of the upcoming The Host from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, was set to star in an upcoming retelling of Snow White called The Order of the Seven until it was recently dumped. She now joins Swedish actress Vikander (Anna Karenina) and Wilde (The Three Musketeers) in the shortlist to star opposite Cate Blanchett, who’s currently in negotiations to sign on as the evil stepmother.

The screenplay by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) caught Disney’s eye back in 2010 after the success of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland with Chris Weitz (About a Boy) providing the most recent script edits. Details are scarce but Slashfilm suggests it’s a “re-imaging of the classic tale where the prince is set for a politically arranged marriage, until the evil plan is threatened when the prince meets Cinderella.”

This film comes at a time of resurgence for fairytale retellings like Snow White and the Huntsman and 2013’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
