With 2012 coming to a close, it’s time to reflect on the year’s cinematic treats, and then crowbar each work of art into a numerical position on a comparative chart. Comedies versus dramas! Thrills versus chills! The great versus the very good! This is the business we list-makers have chosen. Come, shoulder the burden.

The nominees for the 2nd AACTA awards have been revealed, with 2012’s biggest locally produced hit, The Sapphires, dominating the field. A favourite to take the top prize, it faces off against Burning Man, Lore, and Wish You Were Here. Though our AACTA votes have been cast, we can’t dictate which movie will ultimately take the crown. We can, however, order our fave Aussie films of the year and name a victor of our own! Take back the power, people! This is our time! (NB: 2011’s Burning Man placed on last year’s top 10 Australian films list.) Despite there being at least three productions vying for a spot in our ‘Worst of 2012’ chart (coughBaitHousousKathandKimderellacough), it’s been a decent 12 months for the industry. Here’s the evidence.
