Disney is preparing to send Alice back down the rabbit hole as Variety announces a sequel to the 2010 blockbuster Alice in Wonderland is in the works.
Despite some critical backlash, Tim Burton’s epic CGI adaptation of the much-loved Lewis Carroll book went on to make $1 billion worldwide, and the audience’s thirst for all things fairytale hasn’t died down since then.
Screenwriter Linda Woolverton, who wrote the first Alice film as well as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King for Disney, is reported to be back on board for the sequel. Some speculation exists over which direction Woolverton will steer this sequel, with the first film covering both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, although by no means exhausting either source material. It’s also a possibility Woolverton could introduce other characters into Carroll’s world.
No word yet on the return of Tim Burton to direct or Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp to star.
