James Franco probably won’t be in the Apes sequel

Though his character’s relationship with super-smart chimp Caesar formed the backbone of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, James Franco doesn’t think he’ll be involved with the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Speaking to MTV, Franco said: “My guess is I won’t be in it. Nobody’s talked to me since Rupert left.”

He’s referring to the exit of director Rupert Wyatt, who has since been replaced by Cloverfield‘s Matt Reeves.

“I was going to be a small part of the next one… There was one scene, between Caesar and my character, maybe even just like on a video that was left behind, but then a lot of things happened, like [former Fox co-chairman] Tom Rothman who was a big part of the first movie, left.”

Though we doubt Fox would decide against bringing Franco back, even just for “one scene,” we’re intrigued by the prospect of a sequel that has shed all characters bar Andy Serkis’ CGI Caesar.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is slated for a 2014 release.
