The big Star Wars news-of-the-week was Disney’s announcement of several spin-off films in addition to the new trilogy. According to EW, first off the rank: a young Han Solo film.
Reported to be set before A New Hope, it’s unknown how early they’ll take the Han Solo character.
Every possible configuration of this idea sounds like embarrassing fan fiction; from Han Solo: The Teen Years to How I Met My Wookie – The Early Days of Han and Chewbacca.
The other spin-off will likely be dedicated to Boba Fett, the mysterious bounty hunter who tracked our heroes through the original trilogy.
I’m excited about the prospect of original stories being told in the Star Wars world, but not about cash-grabbing origin stories for characters we already know.
Either way, be prepared for a landslide of Star Wars pictures over the next ten years, starting in 2015 with J.J. Abrams’ first episode of the new trilogy.
