John Williams is keen to work on new Star Wars; will J.J. want him?

As the rumour mill surrounding the new Star Wars trilogy kicks up a gear, there is now speculation as to who will score the upcoming trilogy.

Williams

The John Williams Fan Network reports an interesting quote from, well, legendary composer John Williams, who seems keen to continue his definitive role in the series.

Williams’ original Star Wars theme is easily one of the most recognisable music cues in cinema history and he recently was quoted as saying, “I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George.”

The fascinating assumption here is that 81-year-old Williams seems to expect that he will be first choice as composer on the upcoming trilogy.

With J.J. Abrams at the helm instead of George Lucas, one wonders if he is a sure thing.

Abrams works with Michael Giacchino on all his projects, and Giacchino is making decent inroads at being one of the more interesting composers of the moment.

In fact, many of Williams’ recent scores have been a little old-fashioned and maudlin, so the prospect of Giacchino playing with the classic Star Wars motifs is much more exciting than hearing another Williams score.
