Remember when Kevin Smith suggested Clerks 3 would be released online as an e-book, and each chapter would be informed by the internet’s collective reaction to its previous instalment? Never mind.
Smith posted the above image to his Facebook and Instagram account, with the following message:
“20 years ago today, we started shooting Clerks. 20 years later, with no plan or provocation, I jumped out of bed at 4:20 this morning and started writing Clerks III. It’s been like hanging out with old friends. And after 2 hours of tapping the keys and giggling, I have come to a conclusion… Clerks III will be the best film I’ll ever make.”
Even a Smith fan like myself cringes at the “best film I’ll ever make” declaration, though I am heartened by his devotion to the View Askewniverse.
Should Clerks III live up to Clerks II – a great sequel to a legitimate American indie classic – it will be a fine swan song for this unique screen voice.
Or, maybe it’ll be a total disappointment.
